In short
- ChatGPT Business was previously called ChatGPT Team. The plan starts at two standard seats.
- The price per user per month depends on the billing option. Check the current price directly with OpenAI.
- OpenAI says it does not train on data from your Business workspace. You should still review the contractual and organisational requirements for your use.
- A chat assistant can support individual tasks. Defined workflows involving your systems require other solutions.
What the tool means for businesses
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Business is a plan for teams with a shared Business workspace. It was previously called ChatGPT Team. For managing directors and department heads, the first question is organisational: who should use the tool, for which tasks and with what data? A business plan does not answer these questions for you. Before using it, decide which activities are suitable and when a person must review the output.
A starting point could be tasks where employees write a prompt and work with the result themselves. These might include drafting text, preparing outlines or organising information approved for input. Do not enter confidential content simply because you use a business plan. Your internal rules, agreed terms and the nature of the data matter. We are neither a partner nor a reseller of OpenAI.
This article covers the plan, pricing, data privacy and limits of ChatGPT Business. Planning responsibilities and rules for its introduction is a separate step. See our guide to introducing ChatGPT in your business.
Plans and pricing
Standard seats are charged per user per month. At least two standard seats are required. The price varies by billing option; according to OpenAI, annual billing costs less than monthly billing. No figure is given here because available pricing information differs. Refer to OpenAI’s pricing page for the current price.
| Plan | Price according to the provider | Minimum seats or note | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT Business | Price per user per month; check the current amount on OpenAI’s pricing page | At least 2 standard seats | Monthly or annual billing; the price depends on the billing option |
| ChatGPT Enterprise | Price on request from OpenAI | For larger organisations | Individual quote rather than a list price stated here |

Prices change frequently; the currency shown on the provider’s website applies. The OpenAI Help Centre linked below is the source for the plan details. Check OpenAI’s pricing page for current amounts.
The number of seats also affects your budget. According to OpenAI, since 24 August 2026 a Business subscription has allowed no more than 200 paid standard and premium seats. OpenAI directs larger teams to Enterprise. Paid seats that are not used are generally not refunded for the current billing period. Owners can reduce the number of seats for future invoices, but not below two standard seats. Initially, plan only for seats with a defined purpose.
Data privacy and company data
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Business is subject to its Business Terms and Enterprise privacy commitments. OpenAI says it does not train on data from your Business workspace. These are the provider’s statements. They do not replace a review of your contractual documents or your decision about which company data to approve for use.
Before using the service, review the data processing agreement and establish whether its terms meet your requirements. Ask the provider about server locations and subprocessors for your intended use. Also check who will have administrator rights and who may change seats or settings. Document these decisions rather than leaving them to individual users.
An internal AI policy should set out which data may be entered, which may not and who approves exceptions. It should also specify how employees review responses before sharing them internally or using them externally. Involve the people responsible for data protection and information security. This article is not legal advice.
Who it may suit and who it may not
ChatGPT Business may be an option if several people need to work regularly with a chat assistant and you want to organise their use within a Business workspace. Before deciding, list specific tasks: what will employees enter, what output do they expect and who will review it? Without answers, the number of seats booked says little about your needs.
A chat assistant is less suitable as a standalone solution if a process must move between your systems without manual transfer. Nor should an unchecked response serve as approval for a decision that could directly affect customers, employees or contracts. Establish a mandatory review process in such cases.
Larger teams must also consider the plan limit. According to OpenAI, Business has been limited to 200 paid standard and premium seats since 24 August 2026. OpenAI directs larger teams to Enterprise. Whether the limit matters to you depends on your intended users, not simply your total employee count.
What a chat assistant does not replace
A chat assistant can answer a request or produce a draft. That does not make it a defined business process. If data from your systems needs to be processed, reviewed and passed on according to clear rules, you need a defined workflow. AI automation and AI agents may be options. First, establish which steps are mandatory, what data is needed and where human approval remains necessary.
The distinction also helps with budgeting. A seat for a chat assistant is not the same as a solution for an end-to-end process. Assess these needs separately before extending a successful individual trial to an entire department.
How to introduce it safely
A limited start can reveal open questions before you add more seats. The full process is covered in introducing ChatGPT in your business. Three steps are enough for an initial decision:
- Choose a pilot group: Select people with clearly defined tasks. Record what data they may use, what output they expect and how they will check its quality. Include tasks for which the tool must not be used.
- Apply an AI policy: Set rules for permitted and prohibited inputs, responsibilities and the review of responses. An AI policy provides a common basis. Align it with your internal data protection and information security requirements.
- Check approvals before expanding: Clarify the contract, data questions, administrator rights and the seats needed. Only then decide whether to add more teams. With each expansion, check again that tasks and data remain within the agreed rules.
